Quick answer

The cable car starts at the Tung Chung Cable Car Terminal on Tat Tung Road, next to Tung Chung MTR station. The operator describes it as a 5-minute walk from Exit B of the station. Take the Tung Chung line, change at Lai King, Nam Cheong or Hong Kong station if you need to, and bring a passport or an ID card for your voucher.

Tung Chung is a new town on Lantau's north-western coast, the first new town on an outlying island, and Wikipedia says it was developed under the Airport Core Programme. It sits next to Chek Lap Kok, where the airport stands. Tung Chung station is in the town centre on the MTR Tung Chung line, and the cable car terminal is beside it. The meeting point on the ticket is the Tung Chung Cable Car Terminal on Tat Tung Road.

By MTR

The operator says the terminal is adjacent to Tung Chung MTR station and describes a 5-minute walk from Exit B. It also says the Tung Chung line takes about 30 minutes from Hong Kong station. Wikipedia lists Lai King, Nam Cheong and Hong Kong stations as places to change lines. Line colours and train frequencies change, so use the MTR's own planner for the day you travel.

By bus or taxi

The operator's visitor guide lists bus routes to Tung Chung from Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. It gives taxi travel times from Central, Tsim Sha Tsui and Sha Tin. Routes and fares change, so check the operator's guide before travelling. If the cable car is closed for servicing, New Lantao Bus route 23 runs between Tung Chung and Ngong Ping.

Bags and luggage

The operator does not allow oversized or heavy bags in the cabins: nothing larger than 48 cm by 34 cm by 23 cm, and nothing heavier than 4 kilograms. Left luggage is available at the Tung Chung terminal and at the information centre in Ngong Ping Village, and bags must be collected before the cable car closes the same day. Travellers coming from the airport with large cases should use it.

Before you ride

Bring a passport or an ID card, as the booking page asks. The ticket also comes with a separate redemption line. Tung Chung also has a large outlet shopping centre built beside the MTR station and bus terminus, according to Wikipedia, which gives a place to wait if you arrive early. Children under 12 must be accompanied by someone aged 15 or over, the operator says.

From the airport

Wikipedia says Tung Chung sits next to Chek Lap Kok, where the airport stands. That makes the cable car a realistic stop for a traveller with a long wait between flights. The operator's left luggage at the terminal helps here, provided you collect bags before the cable car closes the same day and keep to its size and weight limits.

Other ways up to Ngong Ping

The cable car is not the only way to the plateau. Wikipedia lists New Lantao Bus route 23 between Tung Chung and Ngong Ping, and a second route from Mui Wo, which ferries link to Central. These are slower than the cable car, but they run when the cable car does not, and they suit anyone who dislikes heights. Timetables and fares change, so look them up on the day.

Wheelchairs and pushchairs

The operator says its guest services staff help wheelchair users into the cabins, that the boarding platform is built level with them, and that a wheelchair user must travel with an able-bodied companion. The ticket is marked wheelchair accessible. The operator's FAQ does not mention pushchairs, so ask the operator's guest hotline before you travel if you plan to bring one.
